ADRIAN, MICH. -- The Trine University women's outdoor track and field team had a pair of athletes take top honors as the team finished fourth overall following the final day of competition of the 2018 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Championships.
The Thunder finished the two-day event with a team score of 115.5 points to place fourth of seven teams. Hope (Mich.) College grabbed the team championship with 178.5 points and was followed by Albion (Mich.) College in second with 171 points. Calvin (Mich.) College rounded out the top three with 169.5 points.
Highlighting the day on the track for Trine was the performance by senior Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont./West Yellowstone) who captured the MIAA individual championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by crossing the finish line in a time of 11:52.76.
After qualifying for the finals yesterday, junior Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) recorded a third-place finish in the finals of the 400-meter dash with a mark of 1:00.91. Garrow also competed in the finals of the 200-meter dash and placed seventh in at ime of 27.65 seconds.
Also competing in the finals in a pair of events was freshman Evonne Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and placed third in both the 800 and 1500-meter runs with times of 2:20.22 and 4:55.06, respectively. Junior Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) joined Bultemeyer to also compete in both events and crossed the finish line in fifth in the 1500m run (4:59.44) and sixth in the 800m run (2:25.27).
Sophomore Massie Jo Maskow (Howe, Ind./Lakeland) competed in the finals of both hurdle events and posted a best finish of fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.76 and then placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.05 seconds.
Also scoring points for the team in the running events was junior Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) placed in the top-five in the 10,000-meter run and completed the race with a mark of 40:25.84.
In addition to competing in the individual races, Trine also recorded a pair of top-five efforts in the relays with the team of freshman Abigail Kuhlman (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon), sophomore Kaylyn Forrest (Cassopolis, Mich./Ross-Beatty), sophomore Hope Scholma (Montpelier, Ohio/Monpelier) and Garrow placing fourth in the 4x100-meter relay following a combined time of 51.26 seconds.
Bultemeyer, Garrow, Forrest and Maskow recorded a fourth-place showing in the 4x400-meter relay and ran a combined time of 4:07.15.
In the field events, senior Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) became a three-time MIAA champion in the shot put with a throw of 42' 7.50" (12.99 meters). Sophomore Andrea Hagar (Goshen, Ind./Fairfield) also competed in the event and placed fifth with a best toss of 36' 3.00" (11.05 meters).
Kuhlman earned team points in the pole vault with a best mark of 10' 4.00" (3.15 meters) to finish in a tie for third overall.
Rounding out the field event competitors on the final day of competition was freshman Jenny Flora (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) in the javelin and placed sixth with a toss of 109' 11.00" (33.51 meters).
