HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Senior quarterback Alex Price of the Trine University football team has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Football Offensive Athlete of the Week following the come-from-behind victory at Olivet College, 39-37.
Price amassed 443 yards of total offense in the triple overtime win, the second-most offensive yards gained by an individual in Trine's NCAA Division III era. The Reading, Michigan native threw for 391 yards on 23-of-30 passing and found Matthew Shoemaker, Rodney Johnson and Connor Arthur for touchdowns in the win. The quarterback chipped in on the running game as well with a team-high 52 yards on the ground.
Price's first score came late in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass to Shoemaker. He hit Brandon Kline on the two-point conversion to cut the Comet lead to 21-14. Johnson reeled in a 41-yard catch from Price for a touchdown with less than four minutes remaining to make it 24-21 Olivet.
On the team's final possession in regulation, Price choreographed a 62-yard drive into field goal range. The scoring drive was highlighted by a clutch 4th down pass to Kline for 35 yards and a fresh set of downs. That pass was enough to get a game-tying field goal off with seven seconds remaining.
Down seven in the first overtime, Price connected with Arthur from 22 yards out for the game-tying touchdown to extend the game. After the Thunder went to the ground game in the second overtime, the teams went to alternating two-point conversion attempts in overtime number three. Price completed a pass to Kale Lawson for the game-sealing two-point conversion on a swing pass to the right with the receiver in motion.
Trine plays host to Albion College for a chance to remain in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title contention at home on Saturday, October 22. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
