WAUSEON, Ohio - For the second straight year the Trine University men's and women's golf teams swept the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament hosted by Defiance College. The men's squad took the title with a score of 288 while the women took home the trophy with a team total of 327. Trine sophomore Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) also took medalist honors on the women's side for the second straight tournament carding a 77 on the day.
Played at the Ironwood Golf Club, the par-72 course was played at 6,965 yards for the men and 5,885 yards for the women.
The Trine men's team consisted of all sophomores as they took the win by 12 strokes over second place Owens Community College and 11 other teams. Rochester's Chet Reyson took the individual medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68.
Leading the way for the Thunder tying for second with a 1-under-par 71 was Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond). Sitting in a tie for fifth were Kevin Berry (Holly, Mich./Holly) and Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) carding even-par 72's. Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater ) fired a 73 to finish in a tie for eighth. Rounding out the scoring for the Thunder in a tie for 13th was Corey Bremigan (Russia, Ohio/Russia) shooting a 76 on the day.
On the women's side, the Thunder took the win by virtue of a lower scorecard for their 5th player over Cleary University. Both teams finished 25 shots ahead of third place Rochester. Worthington claimed her sixth career title, taking the victory by one stroke over Brooke Darah of Lourdes College. Also claiming a top-5 finish was sophomore Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) with a 79 to stand alone in fourth place. In ninth place was freshman Julia DeBelly (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) carding an 82 on the day. Another freshman Katherine Guertin (Worthington, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) finished 19th with a round of 89. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder and securing them the victory in the tie-breaker was senior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) shooting a 90 to tie for 21st place.
The men's teams will next compete on Sept. 13 at the second MIAA Jamboree of the season hosted by Adrian College at 1 p.m.
The women's team will host the Trine Kick-Off Classic at Zollner Golf Course on Sept. 12 beginning at noon.
