ANGOLA, Ind. – After conceding an early goal to the visitors from Albion College, the Trine University women's soccer team secured a 1-1 draw.
The Thunder finish the day with a 6-6-5 overall record and a 2-4-1 record in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The Britons on the other hand are now 4-1-10 overall and 1-0-6 in MIAA play.
It looked like Trine would score the first goal. Abby Robison had the first shot of the day and bounced it off the post. Bella Mabry followed up a minute later with the first shot on goal of the contest, forcing a save in the middle of the net.
Albion ended up striking first in the 11th minute of the contest. After the two teams exchanged headers, the ball ended up bouncing back into the Thunder penalty area, where the Briton forward was able to fire the shot into the goal.
The next few shots all came for Trine, but all were a bit off target. Then in the 25th minute of play, the Thunder expertly passed the ball up the length of the field. Three separate passes led to the ball finding Robison sprinting up the far side of the field. The sophomore cashed in on the chance going across the face of the goal to score. Abigail Marks earned an assist for her final pass.
Neither team scored in the rest of the period with the 1-1 score holding into halftime.
That score would eventually go final, but not for lack of effort on the part of the Thunder. Trine dominated the second half, tallying nine shots to Albion's three. They put four of those shots on goal. Mabry led the way, recording three shots on goal in the half and four total in the game.
After the draw, the Thunder's MIAA tournament chances are still in flux. The team is currently in a tie with Saint Mary's College for the final spot in the playoff bracket. Trine owns the tiebreaker in that matchup, so a win in their final regular season match would secure a berth. Trine can finish as high as fifth depending on other results from around the conference. Today's result eliminated them from a chance at hosting a playoff game.
The regular season will conclude on Tuesday, October 24 when the Thunder travel to face The University of Olivet. That match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
