ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 7-0-1 record with a 1-0 victory over 3-2 Augustana College on Saturday afternoon.
The opening minutes were filled with counter attacks as the Vikings got a decent look at the net just 40 seconds into play, but was blocked by a Thunder defender. Trine put up a pair of shots within 10 minutes, but both were off target.
Goalkeeper Sophie Aschemeier [Findlay, Ohio / Liberty-Benton] recorded her first save in the 17th minute, one of five for the freshman on the day. It was the first career start and shutout for Aschemeier in just her second collegiate appearance.
The Thunder peppered the net with six shots in a row spanning over the final 20 minutes of the first half. Attempts were made by Bella Mabry [Oregon, Ohio / Clay], Mia Augustino [Niagara Falls, N.Y. / Niagara Falls], Olivia Argentieri [East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence] and Lia Franzone [Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster], with three shots by Argentieri on target and saved by the keeper.
The deadlock would be broken in the 57th minute when a free kick would be quickly converted into a goal by Taylor Noll [ Anna, Ohio / Anna]. It is the sophomore's first goal of the 2021 season after missing the first seven matches with an injury. Franzone was credited with the assist on the play.
The rest of the game would be physical as the teams jockeyed to get an open look at the net. Aschemeier protected the shutout with saves in both the 76th and 77th minutes.
The defensive line of Andrea Wright [Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield], Blair Wright [Bridgeport, Mich. / Birch Run], Rachel Hill [Guilford, Ind. / East Central] and Ellie Price [Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute North Vigo] provided clearances to allow the Thunder to hold on for the 1-0 victory in the closing minutes of the match.
Trine goes on the road to Manchester University on Tuesday, September 21 for their next match. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 pm.
