FREELAND, Mich. – Freshman Sophie Aschemeier has been named this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week.
It is the third time this season that a Thunder has earned athlete of the week honors and the second time that a defensive player has taken home the award. This is Aschmeier's first time receiving the award.
Trine won a pair of crucial contests against MIAA opponents this week to finish 2-0.
Their first game saw them host Alma College in a defacto playoff game, with the winner earning a spot in the MIAA Women's Soccer Tournament. After an early goal by the Thunder, the pressure was on to keep the Scots off the board to secure the victory. Aschemeier anchored that effort in goal, directing traffic while also finishing with a pair of crucial saves.
Then Saturday saw the team host Adrian College for the opening round of the MIAA Tournament. Aschemeier once again led the defensive effort for the team keeping the game 0-0 through 88 minutes of play. Finally, the Thunder offense came up with a goal in the 89th minute and Aschemeier secured her second shutout of the week, once again with a pair of saves.
So far this season Aschemeir has six shutouts and hasn't surrendered a goal since the team's regular season contest against Kalamazoo on October 20.
The team will travel to face the No. 1 seeded Calvin University in their next competition. The semi-final contest is set to start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2.
