HOLLAND, Mich. - Over the weekend, the Trine University women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall season as they competed in the two-day MIAA Flighted Tournament hosted by Hope College. The Thunder finished the tournament with a 16-20 record. Trine picked up a win in each of the five draws as eight individual players also had at least one victory in singles action.
In the top singles draw, senior Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) fell in the back draw semi-finals 6-2, 6-0. Senior Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) advanced to the quarterfinals in the A draw after winning her first match 7-5, 6-1 over Katie Blumberg of Albion.
Senior Chrissy Uphaus (Richmond, Ind./Centreville) and junior Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) both advanced to the quarterfinals in the B draw after winning their first two matches. Uphaus won 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 before falling 6-1, 6-1. Kwaske won by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 before dropping her final match 6-0, 6-1. Also in the B draw, freshman Bailey Denton (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) picked up a win over Bethany Zoerhof of Calvin 6-1, 7-6 (8-5)
In the C draw, sophomore Alexis Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and freshman Abby Hodge (Berrien Springs, Mich./Berrien Springs) both won their opening matches 7-5, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively. Freshman Kaitlin Black (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) also got a win in the back draw 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 over Elizabeth Taylor from Alma.
All four of Trine’s doubles team advanced to the semi-finals as the team of Schlueter and Uphaus fell in the A back draw championship 8-5. The duo won their first match 8-3 before advancing to the finals by default. On the other side of the A draw, the team of Huhnke and Denton advanced to the semi’s by defeating Albion 8-4.
The B doubles draw saw Kwaske and Mack win their first two matches by identical scores of 8-6 before falling in the semi-finals to Albion 8-2. Black and fellow freshman Allison Marley (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) would advance to the back draw semi’s with an 8-3 victory over Olivet before dropping their match 8-3 to Saint Mary’s.
