FREELAND, Mich. -- Senior Mercede Daugherty (Watervilet, Mich. / Watervilet) has been named this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) softball position player of the week.
This is the first time this season that one of the Thunder has earned the recognition. It is the second time in her career that Daugherty has taken home the award.
Daugherty had a standout performance in the batter's box this week helping to lead the team to a 4-0 start in MIAA play. She finished the week with a 1.083 slugging percentage and a .417 batting average.
The team faced off with Kalamazoo College in their first doubleheader of the week. In the first game of the day, Daugherty brought in a pair of runs on the back of a double as the team rolled to an 8-0 victory. In the second game of the day, Daugherty brought in three of the team's four runs with a double and her first homer of the season as the team finished with a 4-0 victory.
In the second doubleheader of the week, Daugherty continued her offensive prowess. She recorded her second homer of the season to give the team an insurance run in a tight 3-1 victory against Albion. In the second game, she added a single and two more RBIs as the team cruised to a 16-3 win.
The Thunder will face off with Saint Mary's College tomorrow, Tuesday, April 6 for another MIAA doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
