HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Trine women's cross country team notched its best-ever NCAA Division III Midwest Regional finish Saturday at West Ottawa Golf Club.
The Thunder placed 15th in the meet, the team's best performance in the Regional since joining NCAA Division III in 2004. Trine runners combined to earn the team 378 points. Kyla Binfet (West Yellowstone, Mont. / West Yellowstone) led the team with a 39th-place finish. Thunder runners combined to average a time of 23:44.3 on the 6K course. The Great Lakes Regional race featured 232 runners representing 31 teams.
Binfet ran a personal-best 23:01.2 to earn the program's best individual finish in a Division III Regional. The All-MIAA Second Team runner topped her previous-best time by 12 seconds. The junior's time was 30 seconds better than the previous-best program mark in a Regional race.
Kelsey Ortiz (Swanton, Ohion / Anthony Wayne) placed 44th overall in the final cross country race of her collegiate career. The senior crossed the finish line in 23:05.7 to narrowly set a new personal-best mark. The finish was Ortiz's highest in a Regional meet.
Lacie Piekarski (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) also set a personal-best with a time of 23:49.4 to finish third among Thunder runners. The performance eclipsed her previous personal mark by 21 seconds. The sophomore was able to work back from a midseason injury to contribute strong times in the Regional and MIAA Championship races.
Samantha Stensland (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) and Hannah Blystone (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) rounded out Trine's top five. The sophomores totaled times of 24:15 and 24:29.8 respectively. Heather Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind. / South Side) rounded out Thunder runners with a time of 25:36.8.

The NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional conlcued Trine's season. In addition to the Regional performance, the Thunder placed fourth in the MIAA for the second consecutive year.
