HOLLAND, Mich. -- Eight different members of the Trine University men's tennis team competed at the Hope College Fall Invitational. Highlighting the event was a consolation bracket championship for the team of freshman Evan Nay and senior Alex Mullet.
Competing in the Men's "A" Draw Singles were six different members of the team including seniors Aaron Streit and Drew Dixon, junior Ryan Smith, sophomores Caleb Morris and Cole Goodman, and freshman Elijah Schilthuis. After dropping his opening match 1-6, 1-6, Streit picked up an 8-6 win in the first round of the consolation bracket to reach the quarter-final round where he would bow out of the tournament.
Nay and Mullet would compete in the Men's "B" Draw Singles as individuals. Nay became the only member to of the team to win his opening round match on the weekend with a 6-3, 6-0 win on Friday, he would fall in his second match. Mullet came up just short of winning his first match dropping it 6-1, 4-6, 6-10. Moving into the consolation bracket he picked up a tough win 8-7 (7-3) before once again coming up just short in his final match falling 6-8.
Three pairs of Thunder competed in the Men's "A" Draw Doubles including Goodman and Dixon, Streit and Smith, and Schilthuis and Morris. Goodman and Dixon picked up a first round win in exciting fashion by the score of 8-7 (10-8) before dropping out after a 5-8 loss in the second round. Both other pairings would both finish their tournament after two tight losses.
Nay and Mullet were the lone doubles pair in the Men's "B" Draw Doubles for the team. After an opening round loss, the pair received a bye for the opening round of the consolation bracket. They won their semi-final match 8-3 before capturing the consolation championship with a score of 8-5.
The Thunder return to the dual match format when they next take the courts. They will host Anderson (Ind.) University on Monday, Sept. 19 for a 3 p.m. match.
