NEW ORLEANS, La. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced their All-Academic athletes and teams for the 2021-22 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
In order to be eligible for USTFCCCA All-Academic status, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 grade point average and be in the top 50 individually or top 35 as a relay team. This year, more than 500 student-athletes were named in both men's and women's competition.
From the men's team, seniors Josh Davis [Sterling Heights, Mich. / Sterling Heights] and Greysen Spohn [Peru, Ind. / Peru] were honored. Davis competed in sprint events for the Thunder, including the 60-meter dash, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Spohn was active in a variety of different events such as hurdles, high jump and sprints. Both men were Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champions in the 4x100-meter relay at the outdoor conference championships.
On the women's side, senior Valerie Obear [Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern] and freshman Lydia Randolph [Jefferson, Ohio / Edgewood Senior] were selected as All-Academic for 2021-22. Obear qualified for the 2022 Indoor and Outdoor NCAA National Championships and placed 20th in the nation in the discus for the outdoor season. Randolph narrowly missed qualifying for nationals in the 10,000-meter run and showcased her abilities in multiple distance events for the Thunder this season.
The USTFCCCA also gave out team awards, with both the Trine men's and women's track and field squads being named All-Academic teams. To be All-Academic as a team, all student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average above a 3.1.
