HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Tyler Murphy of the Trine University men's soccer team was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week after his four-goal performance in Saturday's MIAA First Round match.
Murphy, a junior from Greenfield, Indiana, has won the award for the third time this season, and second week in a row. Overall in his career, Murphy has been tabbed Athlete of the Week six times.
Murphy was pivotal to the Thunder's 6-1 victory in the team's first postseason match of the 2022 season against Olivet. He was able to find the back of the net four times in the match – a mark that tied the program record and broke the league record for most goals in a tournament match. He also needs one more score to break the conference record for most goals scored in a single MIAA tournament.
Taking advantage of multiple defensive breakdowns by the Comets, Murphy had a string of three goals in a matter of 96 seconds of game time in the second half of the win. On the season, Murphy has scored a team-high 12 goals.
Looking ahead, Trine will make the road trip to Holland, Michigan to face the Hope College Flying Scots in the MIAA Semifinal round on Tuesday, November 1. Kick-off at Van Andel Soccer Stadium is at 6 pm.
