OLIVET, MICH.-- Olivet scored three second-half goals to overcome a two-goal deficit and defeat Trine, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
The Thunder took a 2-0 lead on goals by Brec Musselman (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and Dalton Mullennix (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport), but the Comets rallied back to score three unanswered goals over the final 32:48 to earn the victory. Zach Schulz scored two goals, while Corey Werner-Hoskins added the game-winner with 9:27 to play. Olivet outshot Trine by a 23-11 margin. The Thunder fall to 3-4-1 overall, 0-2 in the MIAA. The Comets improved to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in conference matches.
Musselman got the Thunder on the board with 1:14 remaining in the first half off a feed from Zach O'Brien (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer West). The goal was the second of the season for the freshman, with O'Brien picking up his first helper of the year.
Mullennix added a tally 7:39 into the second half to make it a 2-0 game. The goal was Mullennix's second of the season. Karston Shephard (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) picked up the assist on the give-and-go, the 12th of his career. That ties him with Richard Blasey for the second-most assists by any Thunder player since Trine joined NCAA Division III in 2004.
Schulz scored both of his goals back-to-back to make it a tie game. George Petty picked up the assist on the first tally, while Jared Wilson-Santos picked up the assist on the game-tying goal. That knotted the score with 28:50 to play.
Werner-Hoskins' goal put the Comets ahead with 9:27 to play. Austin Dunn picked up the assist. Trine was unable to muster a threat in the closing minutes, as Olivet took home the victory.
Trine will travel to Adrian Tuesday, Sept. 23 where they will face the Bulldogs at 7 p.m.
