HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Avery Fulford of the Trine University baseball team has been tabbed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week following a standout performance this past weekend at Anderson University. He started at second base in all three contests to be the MIAA's top position player of the week. It is the first time in his career winning the award from the conference.
The senior from Conifer, Colorado went 9-for-15 in the three-game sweep of the Ravens. His .600 batting average consisted of two doubles, two RBIs, four runs scored and one walk. He was strikeout-free and has an early-season on-base percentage of .625 and slugging percentage of .733.
In the first game of the series, Fulford singled to spark a six-run top of the ninth inning for a come-from-behind victory 8-5. Game two of the doubleheader saw Fulford bat 3-for-4 with a walk and came around to score three times. Sunday's 7-4 win saw Fulford go 5-for-6 at the dish to tie the school record for most hits in a game. He doubled from the number two spot in the order in the top of the first inning and drove in runs on a single in the second inning and a ball put in play in the ninth.
The Thunder will travel to the Sunshine State to compete in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational beginning on Sunday, March 5 with a doubleheader against John Carroll University.
