ANGOLA, Ind. – Two members of the Trine University women's tennis team garnered end of year honors from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) the conference office announced today. Freshman Ashley Spirrison (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) made the first team while classmate Tatum Matthews (Midland, Mich. / Herbert Henry Dow) came in on the second team.

It is the first time the Thunder have come away with All-MIAA honors since 2014. Spirrison is just the second player to earn first team honors following Trine alumni Jessica Huhnke '14 coming away with the honor three times during her career.

"Ashley is perhaps the most talented player to ever step on the court for Trine," says head coach Erin Kolar, "I am extremely excited to see how she grows through her career."

Spirrison finished her season as Trine's number one singles player with an overall record of 18-3 while going 17-2 in dual match singles competitions. In MIAA play she was just as dominate dropping just one match during the season while going 7-1.

Also becoming just the second player to earn second team All-MIAA honors, Matthews becomes the first Trine player to earn the award since 2007.

"Tatum fought through several injuries this season and still played great tennis," said Kolar, "She played her best at the end of the season and I look forward to seeing what she accomplishes next."

Matthews competed as the number two singles player for the Thunder and finished with an overall record of 10-11 while going 9-10 in dual matches. She picked up during MIAA play going 5-3.

The two freshmen also competed as Trine's number one doubles team and wen 14-7 overall while going 13-6 in dual matches. In the MIAA they finished the season with a 5-3 record.

"It has been an honor and pleasure to coach both Tatum and Ashley this season," finished Kolar, "The future of Trine women's tennis looks bright."
