FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine University's athletic teams placed fourth in the final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner's Cup Standings, the conference announced Wednesday.
The MIAA Commissioner's Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 22 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner's Cup standings are determined on the basis of each college's standings in eight of 11 sports for men and eight of 11 sports for women. This year marked the first year men's and women's indoor track and field have been part of the Commissioner's Cup standings.
Thunder athletic teams captured two conference titles, one second-place finish and four third-place finishes to help the school accumulate 98 points in the standings. The point total marked a six-point improvement from last year's finish.
The men's track and field team captured the first MIAA championship of the year for Trine athletic teams during the indoor season. The Thunder edged out Calvin on the final event of the day to take home the title. The team was led by six All-MIAA performers.
The softball team shared the school's final championship of the season, as Trine finished in a tie for first-place in the regular season. The title extended the team's streak to five-straight regular season softball championships. The Thunder went on to win the NCAA Division III Softball Angola Regional before being eliminated in the Super Regional round.
