GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Trine University men's track and field team was victorious at the Indiana DIII Championships at DePauw University on Saturday afternoon. The team scored 153.5 points to top seven other NCAA Division III institutions in the state of Indiana.
The Thunder were led by a 1-2-3 finish in the 5000-meter run. Max Van Huis was the event champion at 15:16.71 while Matthew Edison (15:26.76) and Joseph Packard (15:32.67) joined him inside the top three. In the 10,000-meter run, Blake Overmyer secured a third-place time of 32:45.21.
In the five sprint and middle distance events, Greysen Spohn paced the squad in the 100-meter dash (11.02 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.34 seconds), good for third and fifth. Jake Gladieux was the event champion in the 400-meter dash after concluding the race with a time of 49.01 seconds. Philip Nemechek was runner-up in the 800-meter run (1:55.04) and Hank Glasgo third in the 1500-meter run (4:10.87).
Specialty events such as the 3000-meter steeplechase saw Eli Shoup complete the event with a time of 10:04.09 to place fourth overall. The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Maxwell Harris, Spohn, Jayjouir Roberts and Zion Jackson finished second at 42.16 seconds. Meanwhile, the 4x400-meter relay team of Ryan Smith, Nemechek, Aaron Pike and Tyler Hartleroad was fourth at 3:28.37.
Kimball Hughes was best in two field events for Trine, including the shot put where he was second (14.85 meters / 48' 8.75") and the discus where he placed fifth (40.15 meters / 131' 9.00"). Jackson held down the second position in the triple jump at 12.75 meters (41' 10.00"). A third-place finish was credited to Dillon Dennison in the hammer throw (49.23 meters / 161' 6.00") while Hunter Eifert (1.73 meters / 5' 8.00") and Nathan Leap (3.97 meters / 13' 0.25") brought home fourth-place spots in the high jump and pole vault. In the javelin, Colton Wampler was fifth at 43.44 meters (142' 6.00").
The season continues for the Thunder at the Indiana Little State Championships on April 19-20.
