GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine University men's tennis team came back from an early deficit to take the dual in the final singles match of the night. They ended the contest with a 5-4 victory over host Calvin University.
The Thunder came up with only one win in the doubles portion of the competition. That victory came in the No. 3 match by the score of 8-6 from the team of senior Isaac Everitt (Scottsburg, Ind. / Scottsburg) and sophomore Alex Mullet (Westfield, Ind. / Westfield).
The match continued in a back and forth fashion. Trine captured three singles contests to pull the dual to a 4-4 score with the day coming down to the No. 4 singles match. Sophomore Aaron Streit (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) took the No. 2 match with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. Sophomore Drew Dixon (Fishers, Ind. / Fishers) came up with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 5 match. Mullet finished the day undefeated with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 6 match.
The No. 4 singles match would be the deciding moment of the contest and it would take every point necessary to determining the winner. Trine freshman Ryan Smith (Peru, Ind. / Peru) dropped the first set 3-6. He then needed tiebreakers to take the second set 7-6 (8-6) to force the super tiebreaker for the chance to win the dual. There he finally came up with the win 14-12 to take the match and the dual.
With the win, the Thunder improve to 1-1 for the season. They will travel to face Manchester University in their next contest which is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
