ADRIAN, Mich. – A last second goal for Adrian College was enough to hand the Trine University women's soccer game their second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) loss of the season by the score of 1-0.
The Thunder had a flurry of offensive activity in the early moments of the contest. Sophomore Francesca Fronczak had the first shot of the game taking a free kick and turning it into a long distance shot on goal. The attempt forced a save and earned the team a corner. A minute later sophomore Abby Robison came up with the second shot of the game, this time forcing a team save from the Bulldogs.
The rest of the first half was evenly matched with both teams recording shots on goal. Adrian finished the period with two straight shots on goal. Junior Sophie Aschemeier recorded two saves to keep the game scoreless into the intermission.
Over the first 30 minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs had a slight advantage in shots on goals, forcing three saves to just one on the other end. But as the game entered its final stage, the Thunder began to control the tempo, keeping the ball at midfield or in the offensive zone.
Freshman Samantha Sanderlin had the best opportunity to score during the stretch. After Trine worked the ball into the offensive zone with passes from one side of the field to the other, Sanderlin ended up with the ball in the far corner. She worked around one defender and fired a shot at the right side of the net. The Adrian keeper saved the ball up over the crossbar to force a corner kick, that the Thunder were unable to convert on.
Trine had another corner opportunity with 35 seconds remaining in the game. They looked to be setting up an all-out attack, but an early attempt ended with a turnover. The Bulldogs took advantage of the miscue with a pass to the sparsely defended midfield that set up a two-on-one opportunity that they converted into a chance with just Aschemeier to defend. The forward was able to pop the ball over her head and score with just seconds remaining.
The 1-0 loss drops Trine to 5-4-4 overall and 1-2-0 in MIAA play. They will continue their season when they travel to face Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, October 10. That match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
