ANGOLA, Ind. – One goal was all that separated Trine University women's soccer from nationally ranked Calvin University, with the 16th ranked Knights coming up with a 1-0 victory on Shive Field this evening.
The Thunder recorded the first two shots of the game in the third and fourth minutes of play. The first came for sophomore Abby Robison who worked her way past the defense and ultimately earned a corner with her effort. Off of that free kick, Jordan Danna came up with a shot on goal, forcing action form the oppositions keeper.
After the initial flurry of activity, Calvin built a commanding lead in shots. The Trine defense did successfully control the location of those shots. All but one of the ten shots on goal by the Knights were relatively easy saves for junior Sophie Aschemeier, who finished the half with nine.
Just one shot got by the defense, a high lob of a shot from near the 20 yard line just made its way in to the net under the crossbar. The 1-0 lead came in the final two minutes of the first half.
The second half was more of the same, Calvin led the way in shots, but none were particularly dangerous scoring opportunities. The Thunder had just one shot of their own, an attempt by junior Bella Mabry to go across the net that went just wide of the left post.
Eventually the game went final at 1-0.
Aschemeier finished the game with 14 saves, despite recording the loss. Calvin outshot the home team 25-3 in total and 15-1 on goal.
The Thunder fall to 5-6-4 overall and 1-4-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the loss. They remain at home for their next contest, another 7 p.m. kickoff on Shive Field scheduled against Alma College on Wednesday, October 18.
