ANGOLA, Ind. - The Lady Thunder tennis team defeated the University of St. Francis yesterday, March 21 by a score of 6-3. Trine are now 3-4 on the season.
The ladies got off to a quick start as they swept all three doubles matches. The first doubles team of Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) and Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) won a tight match 8-6. Then Chrissy Uphaus (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) and Samantha Willmann (Anderson, Ind./Frankton) won at second doubles 8-4. The Lady Thunder then took the third doubles match as Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) and Kaylynne Goeglein (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) also won 8-4.
The Thunder then took the court hoping for similar success in their singles matches. Huhnke made quick work at first singles as she won 6-0, 6-0. Uphaus then secured the victory for Trine by winning at third singles shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Erin Kwaske added another victory to her record as she won at fourth singles 6-3, 6-2. Schlueter lost a tough match at second singles 6-3, 6-3 and Willman dropped fifth singles by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Goeglein led early at sixth singles when she won the first set 6-4, but then dropped the second set 6-2 and lost the third set tie-breaker 10-5.
The match for the Lady Thunder is set for 1:00 p.m. on March 24th as they open conference play against Alma College at home.
