KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Trine women's tennis team was defeated by Transylvania, 7-2, in the spring season opener Monday at Oak Street Park.
Madison Hatkevich (Granger, Ind. / Edwardsburg) was able to prevail in a tiebreaker to earn the victory at No. 1 singles. After taking the first set 6-4, Hatkevich's opponent rallied to tie things up by winning the second set. Hatkevich had the answer, grinding out an 11-9 victory in the tiebreaker to earn her first victory of the season in her return to the court.
Kyra Braun (Portland, Ind. / Jay County) also had to go to the tiebreak to earn her victory. The freshman rallied after dropping the first set to even things up with a 6-1 win in set two. She then controlled the tiebreaker with a 10-4 win to earn her first collegiate victory.
Senior Abby Hoge (Berrien Springs, Mich. / Berrien Springs) also pushed her opponent to a tiebreaker, but fell just short of the win.
Transylvania improved to 7-6 with the victory. The Thunder fell to 1-5 overall.
Trine returns to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Berry College. The match will be held at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla.
