HANOVER, Ind. – On day two of the Hanover Invitational, the Trine women's volleyball team split their two matches on Saturday, with a loss to the host school Hanover 3-0, and a narrow 3-2 win against Berea College.
The day was highlighted by a monumental career accolade for the Thunder women's volleyball program. Fifth-year senior setter Jacqueline Baughman [Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest] recorded her 2,000th assist against Berea and passed Tori Bluhm for fourth most assists in school history later in the match.
Number 2,000 came at the beginning of the second set, with Baughman setting up freshman Jocelynn Nicholls [Montgomery, Mich. / Camden-Frontier] to make it a 3-3 ballgame.
Baughman was also named to the All-Tournament team as a setter this weekend at the Hanover Invitational event.
Trine is now 8-6 overall after a 3-1 weekend.
TRINE vs HANOVER RECAP:
Olivia Jolliffe [Warren, Mich. / Cousino] ended a 3-0 spurt to start the match for Trine with a service ace, but after gaining an early lead, Hanover took control of the set with 12 unanswered points. Jolliffe and Baughman each collected kills late in the match, but the deficit was too much to overcome in a 25-17 first set loss for the Thunder.
Nothing went right for Trine in the second as Hanover pulled away to a 25-8 victory. Jolliffe and Mikaila Sullivan [Terre Haute, Ind. / Terre Haute South Vigo] were able to get kills, but the Thunder were held back by nine team errors and a negative hitting percentage.
The third was much more competitive. Hannah Sands [Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville] scored the first point for Trine with a kill off the feed from Baughman. Francesca Queary [Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow] chipped in with three kills in the set.
Hanover took a timeout after a 6-0 run was capped off by a Sands kill to make it 18-18, and that led to the Panthers taking seven of the next eight points to claim the third set 25-19.
Jolliffe led the way for the Thunder with seven kills, but Sullivan and Queary followed closely behind with five each. Samantha Carlin [Celina, Ohio / Celina] was the team leader with 12 game one digs.
TRINE vs BEREA RECAP:
Trine converted 12 kills in the opening set of the match, including seven straight kills without an error to start. Sullivan, Anna Loughrey [West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central], Jolliffe, Nicholls and Madison Dominick [Swartz Creek, Mich. / Swartz Creek] all scored points in that time.
Trine held a 12-6 lead before a change of momentum allowed Berea to rattle off four scores in a row. A service error by the Mountaineers allowed the Thunder to go on a 6-0 run to counter to make it 18-10. The set was won 25-14 off a set and kill from Baughman and Jolliffe.
Trine took an early second set lead 12-6 thanks to an 8-1 scoring spree highlighted by six kills and a service ace off the hand of Carlin. The teams traded points until it was 18-12, and from there the Thunder scurried off to a 25-18 set two win.
Sets three and four would be troublesome for the Thunder as Berea took both sets 25-21 to set up a deciding fifth frame. The Mountaineers recorded a game-high 16 kills in the third and took advantage of nine Thunder miscues in the fourth en route to the victories.
Trine found themselves in trouble early, down 5-1 after four misplays in the first five Berea points. The Thunder took their first lead of the fifth 9-8 after three key aces from Jolliffe. A pair of bad sets by the Mountaineers gave Trine the momentum they needed to carry a 6-1 run to victory 15-12 in the final set.
Baughman wrapped up her day with 40 assists, most of which went to Jolliffe, who recorded a team-high 17 kills. Jolliffe also stepped in for four aces in the match as well. Carlin (24), Jolliffe (14), Baughman (12) and Campbell (10) all recorded double-digit digs.
Up next, Trine travels to Franklin College to compete in two matches against Bethany (W.V.) and Marietta. The doubleheader takes place on Friday, September 24 beginning at 5 pm.
