NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Trine University women's volleyball team competed in a tournament at North Central College on Saturday and dropped two matches in straight sets. The Thunder competed against Augustana University to start the day and concluded by facing the host Cardinals of North Central.
The losses put Trine at 8-12 overall. Augustana finishes the day with a record of 17-4 while North Central is a stout 15-6.
TRINE vs AUGUSTANA RECAP:
The Thunder jumped out to an early lead at 6-3 when sophomore Anna Zellers found junior Madison Dominick for a kill, but eight consecutive points by the Vikings put them in control. Trine showed some grit and a kill off the hand of senior Olivia Jolliffe cut the Augustana lead down to 19-16. The Vikings would end up pulling away late for the 25-17 win.
The second set was all Vikings as they dominated the round 25-12. A pair of points by junior Catherine Dobies early in the set looked like it could give the Thunder some momentum, but none was found. Augustana rattled off the final six points in the set to go up 2-0.
There was reason to be optimistic in set three as Trine worked to get ahead 14-9 thanks to seven kills and two service aces by Jolliffe, but a massive scoring run for Augustana would take the wind out of their sails. Nine points out of ten forced head coach Jamie Wozniak to utilize both timeouts to try to stop the bleeding, but it was not enough in the 25-21 loss. A match-high 11 kills in the third highlighted the match for Trine.
Dominick's six kills were the most in the match for the Thunder. Zellers distributed 13 assists to pace the offense. On defense, junior Rachel Campbell dug out 12 opposing attacks and Queary was involved in seven different blocks (one solo).
TRINE vs NORTH CENTRAL RECAP:
North Central was able to throw the first punch in the match with a 25-12 win in set one and would repeat that score in set number two to take a commanding 2-0 advantage. Trine was limited to just five total kills in those two sets.
Work at the net in the third set helped the Thunder to take a lead in set three. Freshman Emmaline Leatherman had a pair of blocks (one solo) to help the team go up 6-3. Freshman Julia Maggio also made an impact in the third set with three kills to help keep the edge, 11-8. Trine would stay close, but were unable to sneak away a set win in the match despite a match-high 10 kills in the third. The Cardinals would complete the sweep with a 25-20 victory.
Dobies and Maggio each had four kills in total with Zellers assisting on eight kills in the match. Campbell had 14 digs in the back row for the team.
