KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Trine University women's volleyball team was defeated by Kalamazoo College in three sets.
The first set of the contest was a long one, but it started with the Hornets taking an early lead. The opposition held five-point leads three times in the first half of the set before building their largest lead of the set at 17-10. From there the Thunder clawed their way back into the contest tying the game at 20-20. Trine then took their first lead of the game at 24-21, but Kalamazoo tied the game again at 24-24 and the set headed to extra points. The teams would trade scores with each other all the way to 33-33 when the Hornets finally put two points together in a row and took the set 35-33.
The second set was once again tied late at 19-19 but Kalamazoo pulled away in the end and took the set 25-22. The Hornets built a lead in the middle portion of the final set holding their largest lead at 22-18, before Trine forced a tie at 25-25 to force extra points. Kalamazoo took two in a row for the match win.
Offensively the Thunder were led by senior Sarah Toles (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) who finished the contest with 13 kills. Junior Kristen Dauksza (Kentland, Ind. / South Newton) finished second with eight.
Senior Jacqueline Baughman (Lake Orion, Mich. / Lutheran Northwest) led the team with 31 assists, while classmate Lindsey DeCamp (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) came in with 10 digs.
Trine falls to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. They will finish off the regular season with a road contest against Albion College which is scheduled for Friday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m.
