ANGOLA, Ind. – On their final home meet of the season, the Trine University acrobatics and tumbling team turned in their second-best performance ever, posting a score of 247.230 to defeat visiting Concordia University Wisconsin by just under 14 points. The top performance sends off the seniors in style after they were celebrated following the contest.
The two teams nearly matched each other exactly during the Compulsory Event, with the Thunder taking a slim 32.2 to 32.1 lead. The team won just the acro heat with their score of 8.3, but they turned in the second-best performance in the toss heat with a 9.5 and a rock-solid score in the pyramid heat with a 9.45.
Trine built up their lead during the Acro Event, winning with a score of 26.55 to 24.90. It was the fourth best performance for the program, despite a fall in the third heat. Third-best scores in both the 5-element heat with a 9.35 and the 6-element heat with an 8.95 combined with a strong comeback in the 7-element heat after the fall secured the score.
In the Pyramid Event, the two teams once again turned in nearly identical scores, this time with Trine winning by just .2 of a point with a score of 28.15 to 27.95. The best heat for the Thunder came in the synchronized second where they posted a 9.55, second best in program history. They also racked up a great 9.7 in the open heat and an 8.9 in the inversion heat.
Trine took a slim 86.90 to 84.95 lead into halftime. They built that lead by some with a 26.05 to 25.30 lead in the Toss Event. Their score was second best for the program, including top-five scores in each of the three heats. They tied the program record in the third heat with an 8.80 and tied the third best in the first heat with an 8.90. They posted the fourth best score in the second heat with an 8.35.
Another highly contested score came out of the Tumbling event with the teams separated by just .025 of a point with the Thunder on top 46.300 to 46.275. It was the sixth best showing for Trine in the event. In the aerial pass they tied the program record with 8.775 and in the quad pass they posted a third-best 7.8. Fourth best scores in the duo (7.45) and 6-element (8.225) passed rounded out the performance.
Despite winning each event, the Thunder took only a few points lead into the final Team Event. They need not have worried as they outscored the Falcons by over ten points. The fourth best score in program history gave them the event 87.98 to 77.31 and secured the meet victory.
Trine improves to 4-2 overall following the win. They will head to Adrian College for their next competition with a dual meet set to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
