GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Two scoring runs, one early and one late, would be enough for the Trine University men's lacrosse team as they win a low-scoring contest with their hosts from DePauw University by the score of 7-5.
The team would score all three goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. The first came on a man-up opportunity scored by senior Matt Zanichelli (Rolling Meadows, Ill. / William Fremd) with an assist by junior Andrew Douglas (Liberty Twp., Ohio / Lakota East). The pair would team up again just a few minutes later to score the second goal of the period.
Junior Noah Markus (Woodbury, Minn. / East Ridge) would tally the third of the period giving the team the 3-0 lead. Freshman Samuel Achor (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) added the assist.
The Tigers would win the second quarter scoring a pair of goals to just one from Trine, but the Thunder would take a 4-2 lead into halftime. Markus would score the lone goal of the period for the team, coming on a man-up opportunity.
DePauw would tie the game in the third period with a pair of goals, the only goals of the quarter. They would then take their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter.
With just under four minutes remaining, freshman Patrick Doyle (Fishers, Ind. / Cathedral) tied the game again with an unassisted goal. A minute later classmate Charlie Anderson (Howell, Mich. / Hartland) would take back the lead with an assist going to sophomore Collin Custer (Spanaway, Wash. / Bethel). Zanichelli, with an assist by Markus, would ice the game with another minute later making the score 7-5.
The game was marked by a strong team defensive effort by the Thunder. The team would tally 16 caused turnovers in the contest with senior Dave Keptner (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) once again leading the team this time with four. He would also lead the team with six groundballs in the contest.
In net, sophomore Nick DiPaolo (Flemington, N.J. / Immaculate) led the way to the win finishing with an impressive 15 saves in the game.
Trine improves to 4-1 following the win. They will return home for their next game hosting Illinois Tech on Saturday, March 26. The contest is set to start at 1 p.m. in Zollner Stadium.
