ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 11-2 victory inside of Zollner Stadium against the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Seven different members of the team tallied goals in the contest.
The Wolverines struck first in the contest with a goal with 12 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
The rest of the first half went convincingly in the favor of the Thunder, with the home teams scoring seven unanswered goals. Patrick Doyle started the scoring by taking advantage of the aggressive defensive tactics of the visiting side. His goal came from nearly midfield with the UM Dearborn goalie marking a man outside of the goal.
Through the rest first quarter, three other members of the team tallied the goals including Riley Fischer, Noah Markus and JJ Boos. Aidan Kubiak and Jackson Bell added assists during the stretch.
Trine scored the only three goals in the second quarter. Peter Piccillo scored the first goal of the period with Fischer adding an assist. Aiden Theobald and Boos each added unassisted goals to finish the scoring and give the team a 7-1 lead at halftime.
The two teams came out in the second half prepared for a more physical contest and it led to ten penalties with both teams needing special teams during the remainder of the contest. Trine's scoring slowed, but they still built the lead to 11-2 for the final.
Kubiak and Piccillo each added a goal while Markus posted two more goals. Fischer and Piccillo each added assist to their day while Jacob Louks and Mason Kaufmann each got on the scoresheet for the first time with assists.
The Thunder will continue their season when they travel to face Oberlin College on Saturday, February 24.
