HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced the 2024 edition of its postseason honors with three members of the Trine University men's tennis team represented. Freshman Sammy Yin was a first team selection while sophomore Andrew Spirrison and junior Cole Goodman both made the second team.
Yin took the courts at the top of the lineup for much of the season. He finished with a 17-4 overall record in singles including an individual championship at the 2023 Hope College Invitational. During MIAA play he went 4-2 in the No. 1 match, missing one dual due to injury. Competing in doubles he finished with a 14-4 overall record while going 3-1 in MIAA play. He competed as the No. 1 pair with Spirrison for all his matches.
Spirrison, who is making his second straight appearance on the second team, was the No. 3 player for the team as an individual but stepped up to the No. 2 match when needed. He finished with an overall singles record of 12-8. For conference play he won the lone match he played at No. 2 while going 4-2 in the No. 3 matches. In addition to his 14-4 doubles record with Yin, Spirrison went 4-1 in doubles with Elijah Schilthuis. Between the two pairs he ended the MIAA slate with a 4-2 record in No. 1 matches and a 1-0 record in No. 2 matches.
This year marks Goodman's third year as an All-MIAA selection. He spent most of the season competing as the second singles player for the team but stepped up to No. 1 when Yin was out of the lineup. He finished with a 17-6 overall record while posting a 1-0 record at No. 1 and a 4-2 record at No. 2 during the MIAA season. All but two of his doubles matches came beside Drew Dixon mostly in the No. 2 match, he added two more results with Caleb Morris. In total he finished with a 15-5 record while going undefeated with Dixon during the MIAA season, once in the No. 1 match and six times at No. 2.
The Thunder posted the new program benchmark with a 14-4 regular season, while capturing a share of their first MIAA Regular Season Title with a 6-1 record. They will take on Calvin University later today in the semifinal round of the 2024 MIAA Tournament, looking to reach their first championship match. That dual is set to start at 4 p.m.
