HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Senior forward Brent Cox of the Trine University men's basketball team has been tabbed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week after leading the team in scoring in back-to-back road games, including an upset win over D3hoops.com #3 team, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. It is his third time winning the award in his four-year career.
The senior from Kendallville, Indiana averaged 17.0 points per game in a 1-1 week at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Cox shot 14-for-26 (53.8%) from the field and was 4-for-10 (40.0%) from downtown. Ball control totals included 13 rebounds, five assists, on steal and one blocked shot.
In the 67-64 win over #3 La Crosse, Cox had 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, a season-high for most field goals made. He buried four shots from beyond the arc to tie his season-best and was needed on the floor for 37 minutes with a shorthanded bench. He had a huge block with 1:18 remaining in the game to preserve a one-point advantage and Thunder free throws down the stretch helped the team stay in front.
Cox recorded a double-double against Stevens Point with 11 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the 2022-23 campaign. He tied for the team lead in points and rebounds and had three of the squad's four offensive rebounds. Eight of his 11 points came in the second half as the team tried to overcome a six-point deficit at the half.
Trine returns home to the MTI Center to host the St. Andrew's Products Classic on December 16-18. The Thunder will take on Mount St. Joseph University in their opening game on Saturday, December 17. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
