ALBION, Mich. -- The Trine men's tennis team edged Albion, 6-3, to pick up the team's first MIAA victory of the season Wednesday evening.
In a match that featured two three-set singles matches and three doubles matches decided by a single point, the Thunder were able to prevail to improve to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Britons fell to 3-10 overall, 0-2 in conference matches.
Judson Quinn (Russiaville, Ind. / Western) earned perhaps the toughest victory of the night for Trine. Quinn took the first set, 7-6, which included a marathon 14-12 tiebreak to break the six-all score. The second set was also decided in tiebreak, with the 7-6 win going to Josh McGarry by way of a 7-5 tiebreak. Quinn was able to rally back in the third set, outlasting McGarry 6-3 to win the match-deciding fifth point of the night for Trine.
Tyler Davis (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Snider) also earned a three-set victory for the Thunder. The senior rallied back after dropping the first set to even things up 6-3. Davis wrapped up the comeback win in set three, 6-1.
Victor Flynn (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South), Garrett Baysinger (Brazil, Ind. / Rockville) and Blake Trusty (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont) added to the success in singles matches to give the Thunder five singles wins. Trusty set a new career-high with his sixth singles win of the season, 6-3, 6-1. Baysinger notched his win, 6-3, 6-3, while Flynn earned the team's first singles win of the night 6-4, 6-1.
All three doubles matches were decided by 9-8 scores, with the the no. 1 and no. 2 matches going the way of the Britons in the tiebreak. Spenser Gilbert (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) and Colin Couch (Batavia, Ohio / Glen Este) ensured the Thunder a point in doubles, breaking the eight-all tie, 7-5.
Trine returns to action Saturday, Apr. 8 when the Thunder host Calvin at 1 p.m.
