HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Senior Anna Gill has been named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Softball Position Player of the Week after stepping up to play in leftfield through the MIAA Tournament, playing a crucial roll in Trine University's success.
Along with teammate Debbie Hill the Thunder swept this week's awards. The two represent the ninth and tenth MIAA honorees this season. It is the first time this season that Gill has earned athlete of the week awards.
Gill started all three of the team's games in left field, due to injuries to other Trine outfielders, and turned in a fantastic performance on the defensive side of the ball. She finished the weekend with a pair of hits and scored one of the team's runs.
The highlight of her weekend however came in the team's second game, a 10-inning 1-0 victory over Calvin University. With the game scoreless in the top of the third, the Knight's looked poised to score the first run of the game. With two outs the Knights put runners on second and third with their number three hitter coming to the plate. That batter came up with a deeply hit ball to leftfield that appeared to be out of Gill's reach. The senior made a diving catch on to the warning track to record the out and steal the extra base hit along with at-least two runs.
The Thunder will host a four-team regional beginning on Thursday, May 18. They start the three-day event with a contest against Waynesburg University at 4:30 p.m.
