WOOSTER, Ohio – The Trine University women's lacrosse team was on the road Saturday afternoon and came up short against the College of Wooster by a score of 18-7. Trine now sits at 2-2 overall while Wooster remains unbeaten at 4-0.
The Scots were able to take advantage of a man up opportunity to net the game's first goal, but the Thunder countered with a pair of scores to take the lead. Calista Richmond found the back of the net thanks to a pass from Danielle Gargiulo, and a few minutes later Gargiulo scored on her own. Wooster countered with two goals of their own in the final three minutes of play in the first quarter to make it 3-2 Scots after one.
Wooster tacked on three more goals to start the second period to made it five in a row overall. The duo of Richmond and Gargiulo would be effective yet again at 12:06 in the quarter for a goal. Richmond became the first to double digit goals scored this season with her 10th of 2023 at 5:35 to cut into the deficit 6-4.
Once again, the home team went on a run and rattled off three straight goals to go into halftime ahead 9-4. Trine was outshot 15-4 in total in the quarter and surrendered six goals.
The third quarter started well for the Thunder with Richmond distributing the ball to Courtney Rhodes for the goal three minutes in. Unfortunately, another massive scoring spree by the Scots extended the gap. Wooster got the final six goals of the third quarter and made it eight in a row at the beginning of the fourth quarter to force a running clock at 17-5.
While down a man, Richmond was able to score by herself and added another goal on a free position attempt as the sophomore converted five of the team's seven goals scored. She took seven total shots and six of them were on frame. The Scots finished the game with a goal as well to put the final score at 18-7.
Wooster held a stern advantage in shots (43-16), draw controls (18-10), groundballs (32-14) and won the turnover battle by a mark of 31-15. Brooke Hoag was able to secure the most draw controls for Trine with four and tied with Emily McKinley for the team lead in caused turnovers. Maddy Kasten made 19 saves in net, a new career-high, and collected a team-high four groundballs.
After a brief hiatus, the Thunder return home on Saturday, March 25 when they host Mount St. Joseph University beginning at 4 p.m.
