WHEATON, ILL. -- The Trine University wrestling team traveled west to compete in the annual Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.
The Thunder ended the tournament with an overall team score of 32.5 points to place 23rd out of 38 teams. The University of Mount Union (Ohio) finished as team champions with 135.0 points. North Central (Ill.) College was second with 105.5 points and Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University was third at 98.0 points.
Individually, Trine had one wrestler place in junior Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) who placed fifth in the 184-pound weight class, becoming the first Thunder wrestler to place at the event. Carver won his first two matches of the day which included a pin in his very first match against Ohio Northern University's Cash Thompson in a time of 3:52. Following a 7-6 in his next bout, Carver suffered a 19-2 loss that put him in the consolation bracket. Carver then posted a 5-0 decision against Colton Cashmore of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, but then fell in a 6-2 decision that put him in the fifth place match. Carver then took fifth via a medical forfeit to finish the day with a 4-2 record.
Trine will return home to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet action when the Thunder host Alma (Mich.) College on Thursday, Jan. 31 at Hershey Hall. The meet is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
