ANGOLA, Ind. - It was a tough night for the Trine University women’s lacrosse team as they fell to Augustana (IL) 17-4 at Fred Zollner Stadium. The loss drops the Thunder to 1-5 on the season.
Augustana, the top scoring team in Division III, tallied the first three goals of the game before senior Shelly Raupp (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) got the Thunder on the board at 20:30. The Trine defense would clamp down shutting out the Vikings over a seven minute period but the Augustana offense would score six goals in an eight minute period as they took a 9-1 lead at halftime.
Raupp would tally the first goal of the second half, her eighth of the season, off an assist from fellow senior Emily Shreeve (Manchester, Md./North Carroll). The Vikings answered back with a goal a minute later before Shreeve tallied a goal of her own on a free-position shot.
Trine would again hold the Vikings scoreless for nearly seven minutes before they tallied five goals in eight minutes, all of which came with the Thunder playing a player down due to a player ejection for a second yellow card.
Junior Emily Canepa (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) would tally the final goal of the game with 1:27 left, for her seventh of the year.
Freshman Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) made 13 saves on the night in goal for the Thunder. Garrett also led the Trine with five groundballs.
Senior Ashley Kocsis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) led the Trine defense with four groundballs and three draw controls. Canepa also picked up four groundballs in the game.
The Vikings out-shot Trine 41-18 for the game, including 18-7 in the second half. The two sides nearly split the draw controls, 13-10. Augustana held a 33-22 advantage in groundballs recovered while Trine committed 26 turnovers compared to 16 for the Vikings. Trine struggled with their clearing attempts, converting just 9-of-23 while Augustana was good on 14-of-17 chances.
Trine will go right back to work, returning to conference action as they travel to North Central (IL) on April 14 for a 1 p.m. (cst.) game.
