NAPERVILLE, Ill. - A rough first half hindered the Trine University women’s lacrosse team in a second half comeback as they fell to conference opponent North Central 14-7. The loss drops the Thunder to 1-5 on the season and 2-2 in the MWLC. Trine’s previous game with Albion had been forfeited, giving them a conference only win.
The Cardinals opened the game scoring just 38 seconds into the half. Senior Emily Shreeve (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) would tie the game with her ninth goal of the season at the 25:29 mark.
With the score tie at one, North Central would go on a run of nine straight goals to finish off the half with a 10-1 lead.
North Central would score the first three goals of the second half as they extended their lead to 13-1.
Junior Emily Canepa (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) would finally breakthrough for the Thunder, scoring with 15:16 to go in the game. Trine would rally to score the next two goals as senior Shelly Raupp (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) and Canepa tallied goals for the Thunder. The Cardinals would find the back of the net for their final goal of the game with 6:31 left to play.
Raupp would score her 10th goal with 5:12 left to play. Canepa would tally a goal again before Lauren Hood (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) scored the final goal of the game with 34 seconds left on the clock.
Canepa led the Trine offense, recording her second multi-goal game of the season. Raupp also tallied two goals in the game, as she has now scored in each of the Thunder’s six games.
Canepa and senior Ashley Kocsis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) led the defensive effort with four draw controls each. Kocsis also led the way with three caused turnovers while she and Shreeve led the team with four groundballs.
In goal for Trine, freshman Grace Garrett (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) made seven saves on the night, six of which came in the opening half.
The loss snaps a three game winning streak the Thunder had against North Central coming into the game.
The Thunder will face Olivet in a battle of future conference foes as they faceoff on April 18 for a 4:00 p.m. game.
