NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. -- Sophomore Luke Carver (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) placed second in his respective 184-pound weight class to lead the Trine University wreslting team at the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University in North Manchester, Ind.
As a team, the Thunder placed 10th overall with 31.5 points. Wabash College ended up as the overall team champion with 205 points, followed by Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University with 192 points and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater rounded out the top three teams with 94.5 points.
Carver posted a 3-1 record on the day and advanced to the title bout against Zeckary Lehman of Baldwin Wallace and finished as runner-up. He recorded a pin in an earlier matchup in the quarterfinal round against Hunter Bates of Wabash in a time of 3:37. His other two victories all came via major decision.
Fellow sophomore Austin Farrell (Hopkins, Mich./Allegan) also competed with Carver at 184 pounds and placed seventh overall. After winning his opening bout with a pin in a time of 2:09 against Luke Sinkovics of Ancilla College, Farrell was defeated in the quarterfinals and advanced his way through the consolation bracket to the seventh-place matchup where he faced his same opponent from Ancilla (Sinkovics) from earlier in the day. This time, Farrell won by major decision, 15-6, to capture seventh place.
Carver and Farrell were the lone two Trine competitors to place in their weight classes.
Trine will next compete in the Alma College Open next Saturday, Jan. 20 in Alma, Mich. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
