ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to help run away with a 5-0 shut out against Alma (Mich.) College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium in Angola, Ind.
The game's lone goal in the first half came at the 20:58 minute mark when junior Connor Malmquist (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) scored his fourth goal of the season with a helper from freshman Alhasan Yahya (Melvindale, Mich./Melvindale).
After only putting up one goal in the opening period, Trine came out of the locker rooms and struck for three goals in the span of about 12 minutes starting with a score from junior Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer) during the 53rd minute that was set up by a pass from freshman Tyler Murphy (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central). Just under five minutes later, freshman Alhusain Yahya (Melvindale, Mich./Melvindale) scored the Thunder's third goal of the game with a shot at the 57:48 mark to pad the Thunder lead to 3-0.
Sophomore Kyle Russell (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) then got in on the scoring with a goal at the 65:23 minute mark to make it a 4-0 game. Alhasan Yahya was credited with his second assist of the night on the Russell goal.
The final goal of the contest came late in the period during the 89th minute when freshman Adam Goushaw (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) scored his first collegiate goal that was assisted by Russell and sent the Thunder to the five-goal shutout victory.
In net for Trine, freshman Troy Saylor (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) played all 90 minutes and recorded his third shutout of the season. Saylor also recorded one save and improves to 5-1 on the year.
The Thunder are scheduled to travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. for a MIAA matchup against Calvin University on Thursday, Mar. 25. The game is to begin at 7 p.m.
