ANGOLA, IND. -- Freshman Tyler Murphy (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to send the Trine University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Albion (Mich.) College and advance to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament Championship game.
Trine (11-4) trailed for most of regulation that saw Albion (1-5) score first at the 32:50 minute mark of the first half and maintained its one-goal lead at the break.
With less than a minute to go in the game, Trine got a penalty kick opportunity on a foul that occurred in the goal box. Junior Brian Morris (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer) capitalized on the opportunity and got his shot past the Briton netminder to even the game at 1-1 forcing overtime.
Neither team scored the game-winner in the first overtime, keeping the game deadlocked at a goal apiece. After a excellent scoring opportunity by Albion late in the second overtime period that didn't result in the game winner, the ball found its way over to Trine who advanced the ball up the field to a streaking Murphy who then took the ball down the field and took a shot from the left side. The shot attempt ended up in the back right corner of the Albion net for the game winner with 27 seconds left to clinch a spot in the MIAA tournament title game.
Trine will face Hope (Mich.) College in the tournament championship game on Saturday, Apr. 24 in Holland, Mich. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
