HOLLAND, Mich. - The Trine University men’s and women's track and field teams finished in third-and seventh-place at the 122nd Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day, hosted by Hope College at the Gordon M. Brewer Track. The third place finish by the men’s team was the best since the Thunder joined the MIAA.
The men’s team brought home four gold medals as the squad finished with 97 points as Calvin won the title with 232.5.
Sophomore Tyler Bourdo (Kokomo, Ind./Western) continued his outstanding season as he teamed with freshman Luke Fimreite (McCordsville, Ind./Mount Vernon) and seniors Dan Linder (DeWitt, Mich./Grand Ledge) and Nate Konzen (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Christian) to take home gold in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:18.90. All four would stand together again on the podium as they took four of the top six places in the individual 400m race. Bourdo won the 400m in an MIAA record time of 47.97 while Linder was second with a 49.55, Fimreite was third with a time of 49.68 and Konzen placed sixth with a time of 50.63. Bourdo also finished second in the 200m with a time of 22.72.
Freshman James Gregory (Warsaw, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) had a trio of podium finishes as he took fifth in the 400m hurdles in a time of 57.80 and sixth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.48. Gregory also came in seventh in the long jump, leaping a distance of 6.33m.
In the field events, sophomore Dakota Bagwell (Kokomo, Ind./Western) made it a season sweep in the hammer throw as he took gold with a distance of 45.74m. Senior Dustin Stutzman (Topeka, Ind./Westview) placed third in the event with a throw of 43.71m and freshman Andrew Bunting was seventh with a distance of 40.66m. Stutzman also took silver in the shot put with a throw of 15.99m. Freshman Sam Gilly (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) would place sixth in the discus with a distance of 40.69m.
Junior Lincoln Frey (Pettisville, Ohio/Pettisville) also took gold in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.22m. Sophomore Sam Taylor (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) also took eighth in the event with a height of 3.35m.
On the women’s side, the Thunder scored 34 points, just 14 points behind sixth place Olivet as Calvin also took the title with 273.5 points.
Sophomore Trisha King (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) turned in the top performance for the Thunder, picking up silver in the 400m with a time of 59.75. King would also finish eighth in the 200m, coming across the line in a time of 27.59. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) took fourth in the 800m in her final MIAA Field Day, finishing in a time of 2:19.45. King and Krug would team up with senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) and freshman Kassandra Ellsworth (Saugerties, N.Y./Kingston) to place third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:08.19
In the field events, senior Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell Senior) picked up a pair of podium finishes in the hammer throw and shot put. In the shot, Stahl took bronze with a throw of 37.99m and in the hammer placed seventh with a distance of 10.71m. Also taking bronze in the javelin was senior Danielle Reenders (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) with a throw of 31.90m.
