ANGOLA, Ind. -- A steady stream of offensive gave the Trine University men's hockey team a comfortable 5-0 win over visiting Marian University.
The Thunder started the scoring with a pair of goals coming under two minutes apart at the midway point of the first period.
The first came off a messy possession in the offensive end with junior Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) ultimately coming up with the puck in front of the net and scoring the goal. Freshman Eli Hernandez (Parker, Colo.) and sophomore Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) adding assists.
Freshman Frank Trazzera (Keller, Texas) started the next scoring play by poking the puck away from a defender in the offensive end. Freshman Justin Meers (St. Charles, Mo.) collected it at the point and passed it toward the crease where Hallford came up with the goal.
The team would add to the 2-0 lead following the first intermission. In the fifth minute of the second period, Brad Jenion (Macclesfield, Great Britain) came up with the puck in his defensive own as the Thunder looked to kill off a penalty. He would take it up the ice and tally an unassisted, short-handed goal.
Then in the 14th minute, the Thunder put the score to 4-0. Junior Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied the goal with freshman Brandan Prappas (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and sophomore TJ Delaney (St. Louis, Mo.) adding assists.
The lone goal of the final period also came from Taffo as he iced the game with an empty-netter to give the Thunder the final score of 5-0 in the victory.
Senior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) was spectacular in goal for Trine, turning aside all 44 of the Sabres shots. The win is his third shutout of the season.
The Thunder improve to 9-8-1 overall and 7-5-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play following the win. The same two teams will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m.
