ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished off the weekend sweep of visiting Fredonia State University with a 3-0 shutout victory.
Sophomore Kyle Kozma secured the win in net for the team, recording the first shutout of the season along the way. He finished the day with 21 saves, which included a few crucial stops during penalty kill situations.
The Thunder took an early lead, scoring in just the third minute of play. Freshman Jack Cooper carried the puck into the offensive zone and fired a shot wide from the top of the near circle. The puck wrapped around the boards and ended up back at the point where Chace McCardle collected it before passing into the fray in front of the net. Tyler Blanchard was in position to fire the shot from the slot to give the team the lead.
Neither team scored until the second half of the third period. This time Josh Wright started the play by poking the puck free in the neutral zone. Sam Antenucci collected the puck and skated into the offensive zone before passing the puck back and forth with Evan Carroll. Carroll eventually took the shot that ended up in the back of the net, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils pulled their goalie in the final minutes of the contest, in a last-ditch effort to get something going offensively. Brendan Finn proceeded to force a turnover in the neutral zone that ended up on the stick of Antenucci. The sophomore carried the puck to some empty ice before passing it off to Carroll, who scored his second of the day on an empty net.
Trine improves to 2-0 after the victory. They will continue their season by traveling to face Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) newcomers, University of Dubuque for their next competition. The first game of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Friday, November 3.
