ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team extended their winning streak after trailing in the third period to defeat visiting Stevenson University by the score of 5-3. The Thunder boasted a balanced offensive attack in the contest with five different skaters recording goals in the game.
The fast skaters of the Mustangs had the home squad chasing for much of the first period, but they still took advantage of counterattack chances with both teams ending the stanza with 11 shots. Stevenson finally broke the stalemate in the 19th minute of play with the lone goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Senior Brett Tierney came up with a great play in the defensive zone poking the puck away from a streaking opponent. Classmate Justin Meers was able to clear the puck away from the board and get it to senior Garrett Hallford who was near the center of the ice. Hallford went the length of the ice and beat a final defender before scoring the team's first goal of the day and tying the score at 1-1.
The only other goal of the period would go to the visitors giving them the lead again for the second period at 2-1. Trine found their offensive rhythm in the final period scoring four goals to finish off the win.
Senior Brad Jenion passed the puck up the ice to setup the first goal. The pass found junior Beau Binnie in the neutral zone before carrying it in to the side of the net before passing it sharply back to the near faceoff circle. Freshman Josh Wright was trailing perfectly to fire a blistering shot into the back of the net.
The Mustangs scored their third and final goal to take their final lead of the game again at three in the 12th minute of the period.
Trine tied the contest again in the 16th minute. Senior Brendan Prappas won an offensive zone faceoff back to sophomore Drew Welsch who fired a shot from in-between the circles that was turned aside. Welsch collected his own rebound and made the most of his second chance scoring the goal.
The Thunder waited until nearly the final minute of the game to take their first lead. Prappas scored the goal by forcing the puck out of a scrum and through the blockers of the goalie. Welsch and sophomore Bobby Price added assists on the messy goal.
Stevenson pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker following the final goal. The strategy backfired with sophomore Tyler Fox clearing the puck to senior Frank Trazzera who was able to ricochet the puck off the boards and into the empty net.
Sophomore Cristian Wong-Ramos picked up another win in net for the Thunder the sixth of the season and of his career. He recorded 20 saves in the contest on the way to that win.
Trine improves to 9-5-1 overall following the win. They will return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play for their next games, traveling to face Finlandia University. The first game of the weekend doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, January 6.
