ANGOLA, Ind. – A three-goal first put the Trine University men's hockey team in control in their home opener against Fredonia State University. The team added two more to the scoreboard to finish the night with a 5-1 victory. Senior Brad Jenion led the way for the Thunder with three points in the contest.
Starting with opening puck drop the home squad dominated the offensive side of the ice. During the first period the team outshot the opposition 12-3.
Those shots quickly paid off. In the seventh minute senior Justin Meers helped set up a 2-on-1 opportunity with a great pass at the defensive blueline. Sophomore Bobby Price took the puck up the ice before passing it back to Jenion at the last moment. Jenion recorded his first point of the day with the goal.
Five minutes later Jenion started the scoring play passing the puck from the point down to the right faceoff circle where freshman Same Antenucci was waiting to forwarded it along. His pass went in to the center of the ice where senior Brett Piper was able to corral it, spin to his left and fire a shot past the goalie.
It looked like the 2-0 lead would last into the first intermission, but a penalty by the Blue Devils in the waning minutes put the Thunder back on the attack, up a man. They ran the power play well with senior Brendan Prappas passing the puck to Jenion at the point who in turn forwarded it quickly to the side of the net. There senior Garrett Hallford finished off the play with his first goal of the season.
Fredonia played their best period of the night in the second, coming out of the intermission ready to play physical hockey. It paid off in the fifth minute when, down a man, they wrestled the puck away from Trine at mid-ice and scored a breakaway goal. It ended up being the lone score of the period and the game went to the second intermission 3-1.
The Thunder recovered in the third, once again outshooting the visitors this time 17-7.
One of the first shots of the period was a good one. Sophomore Chace McCardle sent the puck into the offensive corner where Piper was waiting to center it. There senior Brett Tierney fired the shot scoring the goal and building the lead back to three at 4-1.
Just under a minute and a half later the team did it again. This time freshman Josh Wright dug the puck out of the boards and passed it back to the point where Tierney kept it in the offensive zone. He passed it to the area in from of the net where sophomore Drew Welsch was able to capitalize with the goal, making the score 5-1.
It would eventually become the final. In net for the Thunder, junior Elias Sandholm picked up the win after playing all 60 minutes. He recorded 20 saves in his season debut.
Trine will look to finish off the weekend sweep tomorrow, Saturday, October 29. The second game against Fredonia is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
