DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Trine University men’s and women’s golf teams put up outstanding performances at the Spiess Memorial Tournament. The women’s squad won while the men’s team finished second.
The women’s team beat out two other squads including second place Rochester College by seven strokes to finish the day with a team score of 366. The Trine B team placed third. The Thunder took home the top four individual spots.
Sophomore Leisha Beutler (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson) won the individual medalist honors with a round of 86 beating out teammate sophomore Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) by a single stroke. Junior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) finished third with score of 88. Senior Amanda Mainstone (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) placed fourth with a round of 91.
On the men’s side, the team finished just two strokes behind winner Ohio Northern, shooting a team total 312. The men’s B team placed well finishing sixth in the 11 team tournament toping both Olivet and Heidleberg’s A teams.
Sophomore Nick Ihrie (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) led the way placing second with a round of 75. Freshman Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) tied for third carding a 76. Fellow freshman Mike Reynolds (Wolcottville, Ind./Prairie Heights) tied for fifth with a 77.
