HILLSDALE, MICH. -- The Trine University women's outdoor track and field team completed the second day of competition of the three-day Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.
Trine was part of a field comprised of athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III schools as well as NAIA. The top finish of the day was recorded by junior Valerie Obear (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) in the hammer throw with a distance of 171' 7.00" to win the event by over six feet. Teammate Madelyn Summers (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) also placed in the top-10 with a mark of 139' 6.00" which was good enough for ninth place.
Freshman Haley Livingston (Fort Worth, Texas/Everman) finished in the top-five in the long jump with a best leap of 17' 8.75" which put her third overall. Fellow freshman Kit Kirkpatrick (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) posted a top-10 finish as well in a distance of 15' 6.25" to place 10th.
In the javelin, junior Stephanie Hartpence (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) rounded out the top performances in the field events with a seventh-place showing following a best attempt of 102' 0.00"
On the track, sophomore Amira Faulkner (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) and senior Evie Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) both competed in the 1500-meter run and placed in the top-10. Faulkner competed in the "open" race and placed fourth overall after crossing the finish line with a time of 4:53.78. Bultemeyer ran in the "championship" race and finished eighth overall, and had the top time among D-III runners, thanks to a mark of 4:34.66.
Freshman Kennedi Sternberg (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) had a pair of strong efforts in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the 100m, Sternberg turned in a time of 12.42 seconds to place fifth and in the 200m, Sternberg recorded another top-10 time of 26.65 seconds to finish seventh overall.
The women's track and field team will conclude the Gina Relays tomorrow (Saturday, Apr. 24) with competition scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Hillsdale College.
