FREELAND, Mich. – The Trine University track and field program saw three student-athletes win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week award. Haley Livingston [Fort Worth, Texas / Everman] was named MIAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Valerie Obear [Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern] and Theodore Samra [Lansing, Mich. / DeWitt] were both honored as MIAA Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the Week.
Livingston was able to lower her school record times in all three events she competed in Saturday at the Steemer Showcase. The sophomore won the long jump at 5.46 meters (17' 11"), placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.04 seconds and was fourth in the 60-meter dash at 8.04 seconds. Livingston broke her own record in the 60-meter dash with a 7.98-second preliminary time to start the day.
Obear was able to set a new personal best score in the weight throw at Wittenberg University with a toss of 18.27 meters (59' 11"). Obear won the weight throw event and was less than two-tenths of a meter off the school record mark currently held by Kara Eck from 2017.
Samra continued to show improvement during the indoor season in field events and set two new personal bests last weekend. Samra took home second-place in the shot put with a throw of 14.79 meters (48' 6.25") and fourth in the weight throw at 16.15 meters (53' 0").
Each of these competitors have won Athlete of the Week multiple times this season. For Livingston, this is her third time winning MIAA Athlete of the Week award. Obear has won it twice this season and this is her fourth time taking home the prize in her career. Samra has won the indoor award twice this season thus far.
Up next on the schedule for the Trine track and field programs is the Windy City Rumble, hosted by the University of Chicago. That event takes place on Saturday, February 5.
